The Spirit of Dover

Canaler statue

The Spirit of Dover will be a 7′ tall bronze statue that will sit in the Northeast corner of Wooster & Third St. It will be a symbolic icon of Dover that will be a constant reminder of our rich heritage and links to the Ohio & Erie Canal. The sun will rise in the East and shine on the back of the “Union” (the Union was a canal boat that was built in Dover) and will set to the West with the firm gaze of the boat Captain focusing on his route.

Cannaller

The Spirit of Dover

The canal system was built and canal commerce was developed by ordinary men who were willing to work hard and take some risk to provide a better life for the generations that followed then; in a large sense these same traits have come to define our community. Dover was founded, built up, and continues to grow and prosper because of its citizens, our true strength. In the years since Dover’s founding in 1807, successive generations of pioneers, canallers, millworkers and other ordinary people shared a strong work ethic, sound values and a deep sense of the value of family; they are the firm foundation upon which the City of Dover is built.
