Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the Historic Canal Dover Association (HCDA).  The HCDA was founded with the vision to improve the community of Dover as a whole, beginning in the downtown area.  Our membership has grown as well as our thoughts about where Dover needs to grow and take advantage of future opportunities.

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 17 at Sunnyside (5494 N Wooster Ave) from noon to approximately 1pm. Our guest speaker will be Dan Rice from the Ohio & Erie Canal Coalition. He will update us on the efforts to bring the towpath in to Dover and beyond to New Philadelphia.

Gas Pump

Mark your calendars and please plan to join the HCDA for the Dover Bike & Hike History Tour on Saturday, May 3rd from 10am to 2pm. The tour starts from the American Gas Pump Museum (Southeast corner of Tuscarawas Ave and Front St.). Thanks to Mr. Roger Ramsey, owner of the AGPHM for his hospitality. Both the American Gas Pump Museum and Larry Auman’s Auman Museum of Radio and Television will be open during the event. Come out and enjoy the spring weather with your family and friends and learn a little about Dover’s history. The HCDA is focused on promoting safe biking for all ages and we will be giving away 25 youth bike helmets that we received through a grant from the Ohio Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics. We have a limited number so plan to come early if you want a bike helmet.

downtown DoverWe participate in a lot of activities in Dover including the Downtown Dover Car Show with Kustom Kemps of Ohio, the Tuscarawas River Canoe & Kayak Race, Lions Halloween Parade, Sidewalk Sales, Dover’s Night of Good Cheer and the Dover Christmas Parade.  We were one of the organizations responsible for building the information kiosks on the square, clearing the canal towpath between Wooster and Tuscarawas Avenues, built a replica of the Canal Dover Toll House on Front Street, and we are involved with forming the hiking and biking trails along the canal towpath.  Our future goals include helping with the development of the riverfront park, repainting the ghost signs in the downtown area and rehabbing and creating green space in the downtown area. Accomplishing these HCDA projects will improve and beautify the City of Dover, enticing businesses and tourism to thrive.

We are a 501c3 organization capable of accepting donations that not only benefit HDCA but you by way of a tax deduction.  We have many levels of membership.  Please click on the Organization tab for more membership information.  Without your support, the HCDA would not be able to continue these projects.   With help from dedicated civic-minded individuals like you, Dover will continue to be a vibrant community.  We hope you can join the HCDA and help make Dover a strong community and business district.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Howard Dugger
